about

'Complicity' is the fourth and final full-length album by Dublin musician/producer Cormac Phelan under the moniker 'Thirteen'.

Where previous 'Thirteen' albums attempted to deal with themes like loss, conflict, tension and guilt, this album deals instead with the resolution of these themes. As such, 'Resolve' is a fitting and uplifting conclusion to the 'Thirteen' project, and the artist couldn't be happier with it as the final piece in this body of work.

Musically, 'Resolve' refines many of the stylistic hallmarks of the 'Thirteen' project, which aims to combine texture, sparsity, melody and atmosphere to create dark, intimate recordings. Stylisticaly, the most obvious comparisons have always been Radiohead, Low, Nine Inch Nails or Elliot Smith, and this remains the case, but 'Resolve' brings new lush analogue-electronic elements that are remeniscent of artists such as James Blake, Emika, Rival Consoles or Alessandro Cortini.

‘Resolve’ was written, self-recorded and produced at home in Dublin from 2017-2020, with several new tools influencing writing and recording, most significant of which was the use of a chaotic homemade analogue pedal board on almost every recorded part of the album. Piano, vocals, drums, guitar, Moog, drum machines, Minilogue...almost all parts were manipulated and mangled live by this array of samplers/drives/compressors/tape-delay pedals, before being captured on the other end in Reaper...with my fingers crossed!

In brief, this is a sentimental but happy final record. I am hugely proud of the last 13 years of 'Thirteen', and I'm so happy that it has come to a positive conclusion in time for me to start a family with my wife and son, born 1 week after 'Resolve' was finished and mastered.
